MYTH
Most users of Marijuana go on to use Hard Drugs such as Heroin and LSD

FACTS
Most users of Heroin and other hard drugs have used Marijuana. However, most Marijuana users have never used another illegal drug. When Marijuana use increased in the 1960s and 1970s, Heroin use declined, and when marijuana use declined in the 1980’s, heroin use remained fairly stable. In the last 20 years or so Marijuana use has fluctuated whilst LSD use has remained fairly stable. In short, there
is no inevitable relationship between Marijuana and the use of other drugs.

Holland is the perfect example of how hard drugs are separated from the soft drugs. In the states 16% of young Marijuana users have also tried hard drugs, whereas in Holland this is only 1.8% and Cocaine use is on a marked decline. Holland’s policy of allowing Marijuana to be bought openly in government regulated ‘coffee shops’ was designed to specifically separate young Marijuana users from illegal markets where hard drugs are sold and more available. A policy that seems to have worked well in the past decade.

MYTH
Marijuana is much more dangerous than tobacco.

FACT
Smoked Marijuana contains about the same amount of carcinogens as does the same amount of tobacco. It should be pointed out however, that a Marijuana user tends to smoke a lot less tobacco than a heavy smoker. This is because tobacco is much more addictive than Marijuana. In fact it is the most addictive drug available whilst Marijuana is less addictive than caffeine. It should also be pointed out that eating or drinking Marijuana such as in a Bhang, removes almost all of the carcinogens. When taken this way, there is no doubt that Marijuana is indeed a lot safer than tobacco!
